My Favorite Covers: Transformers #5 (1984)

Hey everybody. I’m introducing a new Thursday segment called “My Favorite Covers,” showcasing some of my favorite comic book covers of all time. I’ll be switching back and forth between this segment and “The PKD Media Spotlight” on Thursdays until we change the lineup.

One of my favorite covers has to be Transformers #5 (1984). Beautifully pencilled and inked by Mark Bright with colors by Nelson Yomtov, I was completely floored when I saw this at my local comic book shop.

I was so in tuned to the animated series that this cover made no sense to me at all. Shockwave was a wuss in the cartoon; how did he become so hardcore in the comics? Why didn’t the Marvel series follow the animated series? The Autobots defeated? Optimus Prime and Megatron out for the count? I had to read this comic.

The colors on the cover make Shockwave look so formidable, and the lettering is great. Mr. Bright brought the funk on this one.

More of “My Favorite Covers” to come next week. Come back tomorrow for another installment of “Agents of C.O.L.T.” feat. the art of Andrew Charipar.

Peace and good times.

You’ll find that this cover is a favorite among many Transformer fans as well. I’ve seen it without the logos and stuff, but without the “Transformers” to preceed “are all dead”, it feels to me to be missing something.
