PKD Media Spotlight on: Angry Gnome Comics!
I had the pleasure of first meeting Shawn & Stephanie Gabborin of Angry Gnome Comics during the 2007 Pittsburgh Comicon. After a few conversations at the show and dinner at Primanti’s Brothers, we all became good friends, and they gave me some insight on creating indie comics.

Shawn writes such titles as Victor Season, Palm Reader, and the infamous Short Stack; an anthology horror comic that consists of many 2-page horror stories written by Shawn Gabborin with various artists handling the art chores. In his spare time, Shawn works up on his penciling and martial arts skills. If memory serves me correct, Shawn is a Black Belt and also teaches Martial Arts classes on top of his 9 to 5 and writing comics.
Stephanie has provided pencils for Victor Season, Palm Reader, and various stories in Short Stack as well. Stephanie’s art style can vary depending on the story she’s trying to tell. In “Palm Reader,” Stephanie’s sequential artwork consisted of pencils and tones with no inks which lent to the creepiness of the story as a whole. She’s also draws a mean Wonder Woman and studies Martial Arts as well.

Currently, Angry Gnome Comics is working on their latest project called Greenbrook; a comics project spread out over several indie comics companies such as Angry Gnome, Space Monkey Comics, and us here at PKD Media. I’ll let Shawn break down Greenbrook for you:
“The premise of the project is simple: Give a varied group of creators the same story concept, and see where they take it! Genre, Time Period, Location… It’s all up for grabs! The character names are the same… but their ages, relationships, even gender varies from story to story. What happens in a Greenbrook populated by Superheroes? Or how about a Greenbrook with a Sci-Fi twist? Comedy? Action? Horror? We’ve got you covered! “
Greenbrook will make its debut at the Pittsburgh Comicon this September!
I can honestly say that Shawn & Stephanie are some of the nicest people/publishers you will ever meet at a con, so even if you’re not into horror comics or Gnomes, stop on by and chat with them for a moment.
